Mike Cottone (tpt) and Tamir Hendelman (piano) Duo Concert- Miles Davis tribute at PQ Sessions (Sherman Oaks house concert )
PQ Sessions and the Jazz Plus series present:

Trumpeter Mike Cottone and pianist Tamir Hendelman- Tribute to Miles Davis

Mike Cottone is a Juilliard and Eastman School graduate from Rochester, NY who attended
the prestigious Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz led by jazz legends Herbie Hancock and
Wayne Shorter.  He has performed and recorded with Al Jarreau, Ruben Blades, Mike Garson, Ulysses Owens Jr, and Don Henley.  Mike has also been a member of Blood Sweat and Tears
and the Bette Midler Divine Intervention Tour.  He is now a first call soloist in the Los Angeles
area where he performs and tours with Postmodern Jukebox, Ebi, Done Henley, Holophonor, The Mudbug Brass Band, and the Eagles.

Tamir Hendelman is known as a leader of his own trio with two jazz chart topping releases under his name, as well as a long-time member of the Jeff Hamilton Trio and Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, and has performed and recorded with vocalists Roberta Gambarini, Natalie Cole, Tierney Sutton and Barbra Streisand.  He has performed with orchestras, including a new rendition of Rhapsody In Blue- and given solo recitals celebrating the music of Cole Porter, Thelonius Monk and Dizzy Gillespie.

Together they will pay tribute to one of the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music, a trumpeter, bandleader and composer who adopted a variety of musical directions in a five-decade career that kept him at the forefront of many major stylistic developments in jazz.  Making his mark as a member of Charlie Parker's bebop quintet in the mid-40's, he soon recorded teh Birth of the Cool, ushering in the era of cool jazz.  In the early 1950s, Miles Davis recorded some of hte earliest hard bop music while on Prestige records.  He work with John Coltrane and Paul Chambers in his first sextet is legendary as are his orchestral jazz collaborations with arranger Gil Evans, such as the Spanish-influenced Sketches of Spain.  Kind of Blues (1959) remains one of the most popular jazz albums of all times.  In the early sixties, Miles introduces Ron Carter (bs),Herbie Hancock (pno) and Tony Williams (dr) to the world, soon adding Wayne Shorter (sax) to his new quintet in 1964.  This more abstract and adventurous group led to his electric period of the 70's, when he experimented with rock, funk, African rhythms, electronic technology and fusion which led to pop-inspired explorations in the 1980's.   In 2006, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which recognized him as "one of the key figures in the history of jazz."
